Nantucket Nibi are 2 words from the Wampanoags Indian language spoken by Nantucket’s first settlers, The Wampanoags, or the People of the First Light. The words translate to Water from a Far Away Land.
Nantucket Nibi comes from a vast underground lake formed by the retreating glaciers between 14,600 and 11,900 years ago.
Nibi has a Ph of 7.4, it is moderately hard and is rich in life sustaining minerals. Best of all it is pure and untouched- completely untreated.

Around 23,000 years ago the Laurentide Ice Sheet extended to where Nantucket lies today. By 21,000 years ago the ice sheet retreated north to extend just south of Cape Cod. Because so much water was locked up in the massive ice sheet extending across North America, sea levels were 300 feet below current levels making Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard part of the mainland.

The weight of the glacier depressed ice into the sandy soil creating ‘kettles’ These kettles later filled with the pure water that ran off from the melting glacier. Around 12,000 years ago the glacier once again advanced and then retreated depositing clay over the top of a large lake that had formed under Nantucket and extending north into Nantucket Sound, permanently encapsulating the underground lake.
